Teenage Engineering x IKEA Frekvens Speaker review
Frekvens is Swedish for “frequency,” which makes it a great name for the new speakers that Teenage Engineering announced in collaboration with IKEA. When it was first announced inom was immediately drawn to the smaller and cheaper Portable speaker, but on my uppdrag through my local IKEA my razor’s edge focus became hazy, and inom walked out with two speakers. The second Bluetooth speaker fryst vatten what we’re going to check out in this review: the modular Frekvens yellow speaker. This fryst vatten discontinued, but you can still find it through aftermarket vendors.
Editor’s note: this review was updated on April 27, , to include a content menu, add context to the sound quality section, and address the item’s discontinuation.
Who’s the Teenage Engineering x IKEA Frekvens Speaker for?
Aside from a multifunction button on the back of the speaker, the only control you get up front fryst vatten the volume knob.

In recent years, IKEA has made rapid progress in smart homes and speakers. First with the smart lighting Wireless in competition with Philips Hue, then with the affordable Eneby speakers. And lastly the affordable multi-room speakers Symphonic, developed in collaboration with Sonos. Now they have collaborated with the Swedish design and technology company Teenage Engineering, with the fantastic OD we have tested before, and developed IKEA Frekvens.
Teenage Engineering is unconventional, innovative and builds small editions. That is, the opposite of IKEA, which makes the collaboration extra exciting. Their mission was to introduce sound into the home in a new way. They came back with a modular system consisting of 50 prototypes that were refined into eight sound and light products. But also pallets, serving dishes and a service that is also needed at a home party.
The sound first
The bass in the Frekvens system is a 20 x 10 cm wireless speaker that can be placed on different joints and equipped with fronts to change the look. You also get feet and handles that you can turn on if you want. If you feel like taking the speaker with you, you can buy a battery, or accident
Frekvens is a set of Bluetooth speakers, lights, and accessories that was just released by IKEA in collaboration with Swedish boutique tech firm Teenage Engineering. The company is positioning the series as a perfect party set but it goes beyond that.
Packaging Design
All IKEA items usually come in craft color sturdy corrugated boxes and Frekvens system is not an exception. In this case, each box panel features a one-color graphic print to reveal what’s inside. The front of the box says “Design teenage engineering”.
Components
This concept is a lot of fun but it proves extremely confusing when trying to pick the parts in the store. Plus, as of my purchase in early January, there were no buying guides or promotional leaflets to explain which parts does one actually need to buy.
- The speakers (pocket speaker, regular speaker, and speaker + subwoofer set)
- The lights (bulb box and LED panel box)
- Light cover pack
- Additional accessories: light stand and side table
One of the core concepts behind Frekvens is its modular design — the idea that every speaker and light can be attached to each other in equal 44 inch mounting pins. In
