Dagens Scania bildades när dem två biltillverkarna Scania inom Malmö samt Vabis inom Södertälje gick samman samt bildade Scania-Vabis.

Vabis (Vagnsfabriks-Aktiebolaget i Södertälje) startades från Surahammars Bruks AB kalenderår i Södertälje med Philip Wersén liksom verkställande direktör för för att tillverka järnvägsvagnar. Kunder fanns bland annat Statens Järnvägar (SJ) samt Stockholms Spårvägar. Bolaget fanns mycket lönsamt.[2]

    The company’s turbo engines provided it with its key competitive edge. “More power, fewer revs” was the designers’ watchword in attempts to achieve higher efficiency while at the same time cutting fuel consumption and emissions and reducing running noise.     The initial company was established by a few industrialists who got together and created the Vagnfabriks Aktie Bolaget I Södertälje (Vabis) for the production of railway wagons. The company introduced the first Swedish-built car in It was designed by Gustaf Erikson who had signed a contract with Vabis.

    Three years later a brand new company called Maskinfabriksaktiebolaget Scania acquired a bicycle manufacturer in Malmö, thus establishing a subsidiary there. Meanwhile, Erikson was able to improve his mechanical design and by the company showed its first truck. The first factory-produced car left the factory a year later. In the company delivered its first industrial engine to the Stockholm fire brigade.
